Tips on Preparing for Your Maternity Photo Session

Bringing a baby into the world is a wonderful life event that should be captured. It’s a time you are going to want to remember and share with your little one once they are a bit older. If you are thinking about or have recently booked a maternity photo session then the below tips should come in handy as your prepare for your session.

1. Schedule your session between 31 and 36 weeks as your tummy should be showing enough and you have a beautiful shape. By booking your maternity session during this time you are also past the discomfort and bloating that happens earlier in the pregnancy.

2. We know how important it is to moisturize those knees, elbows and belly but we recommend you do so 1 – 2 hours before the session to avoid any shininess or sticky clothes. You should also avoid wearing any tight fitting watches or bracelets that might leave marks on your skin.

3. Treat yourself to a neutral or light colored manicure 1 – 2 days prior to your maternity session so that you can take some beautiful shots with your hands on your tummy.

4. If you have a family heirloom you would like in the photos, bring it. I love to include special items that have sentimental value.

Surviving a Family Photoshoot

How to make your next family photo session a stress free one.

Family photos are truly timeless and such a great keepsake for future generations. Getting the family together to take those perfect portraits can turn into chaos if not approached correctly. There is usually a lot more to consider when it comes to a family photoshoot since there are members of all ages, which means that there is some extra coordination involved.

Below are some family photoshoot ideas and tips to keep you and your loved ones calm and smiling the whole way through.

Timing is everything. If you have younger children involved in the shoot, try and arrange the photoshoot at a time when they would be well rested. A rested child makes for happy photos. On that note, make sure that all family members have gotten enough sleep the night before as this helps with the fun and relaxation aspects of the session.
Dos and don’ts of bribery. Get your family excited about the photoshoot instead of offering a reward in return for their cooperation. This tends to lead to forced smiles and an irritated bunch of people. If you do have small children coming along it’s not a bad idea to give the photographer some bribery options in the form of toys or small food items to make those difficult moments a little easier
Relinquish control. As much as you’ll want to direct your children on where to stand and how to pose, it’s best to leave that to the photographer as they know what works best. Not having this pressure will also make you feel more relaxed.

4. It’s not just about the posing. The best photos happen when you’re having fun so joke and play with your children, hold your partner’s hand and just let the moments happen.

5. Plan ahead. Discuss all of your requirements with your photographer beforehand so that the family photo session can just flow. Let your photographer know if you want specific pictures taken.

6. Keep those sugar levels up. If everyone is well fed, the photoshoot will also run a lot smoother. It’s also not a bad idea to take a few snacks and some water along for those who might need it.

A Guide to Posing for Your Family Photos

The key to taking genuine and authentic family photos is knowing how to pose in front of the camera.

If you’ve never taken professional family photos before or if you simply want to improve on your last session, here is some advice on how to pose that will leave you with exceptional images.

Get Close

The last thing you want is a family portrait that looks stiff and awkward. The secret to creating a beautiful, intimate family photo is to get close. Snuggle up with the people you love if you want the best photos. If there are people of varying heights in the photo, take a few photos on the same level so that you can get your heads close together too.

Have Fun

Your photos always look more authentic when your family is genuinely having fun and laughing. Spend time talking about your favorite vacation or a memory that makes you all laugh out loud. These candid moments always make for the best photos.

Keep it Natural

When you overthink posing, it takes away from the genuineness of your photos, which is why it helps to shoot your family photos in a setting where you’re all comfortable and where you can go about your lives as naturally as possible. For example, if you’re in an outdoor setting, take your little one for a walk. If you’re shooting at home, bake something together or snuggle up for a story.

Use Your Surroundings

Very often, standing upright in the middle of a room or garden will make your photos look and feel stiff. Use your surroundings to make yourselves more comfortable. For example, if there’s a wall in the vicinity, lean up against it. If there’s a couch available, pose on that for a few shots.

Make Use of Props

If you would like to change things up a bit or give a younger child something to do, you can also always incorporate a few basic props into your photos to get a few non-standard shots.

Getting a sleeping newborn to smile is a tricky thing. Some say you can gently caress their cheek and they will smile. Occasionally that will work, but more times than not, it is just sheer luck when they smile :-) This sweet little angel gave me more smiles than I usually have in 10 newborns combined! The smiles just kept coming, and I just kept clicking! This doesn't always happen so easily so I thoroughly enjoyed her displays of happiness that she showered me with....if only they all did this!

Colors and antiques....

I love it when parents let me choose what colors to use....when they trust me with making beautiful choices for them. This olive green set-up is one of my favorites and I was thrilled to use it on this little angel. Sometimes babies don't always sleep when you want them to, but that doesn't stop me from getting magical shots...sometimes more magical than a sleeping pose. There is just something about a newborn looking deep into your eyes. It can take your breath away!

I recently bought this gorgeous miniature antique sofa. This is a true antique, not a replica, and I can't help but wonder who it was created for....a rich little girl growing up in a luxurious antebellum home in the south? Who knows? But now it will serve as an amazing backdrop for sweet little humans new to the world and what a statement it makes. It is great for newborns as well as sitters. I can't wait to see where else I can use this treasure :-)

Logan's 7-month Photo Session

This sweet mom has been coming to me for years beginning with her first baby. She is now taking advantage of my "Baby Plan" and has brought her second child, sweet Logan, for his 7-month session. I was able to use some new props that I've been dying to use. First being a rustic bed that my husband lovingly built for me.

Another prop that I was dying to use was this vintage bathtub! How cute is Logan sitting in there having a bubble bath!

And the last new prop that I got to use was an antique typewriter! And with these baby eyeglasses finishing off the look, Logan looked like he was writing the great American novel!

And lastly, being big Bulldog fans, the parents wanted Logan to be a "Bulldog Baby"! He really rocked that helmet!

My Husband is the Greatest!

Sweet Little Pin-Up Girl!

When you book your session with me you will receive a questionnaire asking you about your preferences in style and color. This mom wanted a romantic style reminiscent of the 1940's. We put sweet little Olivia on a white fur and she did all the rest!

For another set-up, we put Olivia in a piece of vintage luggage. I love to use my pearls and long gloves as extra accents to finish the look. Olivia was a natural!

Mom was worried that olivia wouldn't be able to hold her head up or smile for us, but instead she was wonderful!

For her last set-up we put Olivia on a pink backdrop and she showed us her more serious side!

Advice she gives to moms for milestone sessions...
- Take your baby's favorite toy to the session- it can help capture a smile
-Make sure your baby has been fed and had a good nap before the session

Maternity Session in the Woods

Although maternity photography may seem entirely different from newborn photography, they both have one thing in common, they are both an opportunity to capture a very brief, precious moment in time that is gone in a flash. A pregnancy may feel like forever, especially when you have had a difficult time (i.e. morning sickness, swelling, etc.), but as those of us who have older children can tell you, your pregnancy will be nothing but a blur before you know it. Capture it...cherish it...preserve it...

Lacey and Eddie were overwhelmed when they found out they were expecting a baby. When they knew they wanted maternity pictures Lacey said she first figured out the style she liked and then was on the hunt to find a photographer that could capture that style for her.

One of Lacey's biggest worries was whether she would look fat vs. pregnant. I work very hard to make everyone look their best, and I think Lacey looked amazing!

When asked, "How would you describe a photo session with Bitsy Baby Portraits to your best friend?" Lacey responded, "It was very easy. We were told exactly how to pose! She showed us a few shots on the camera so we had an idea of what the photo was capturing, which I loved!"

"He is perfect!"

The first thing mom thought when she saw little "D.J." for the first time was, "He is perfect!". Denise and Damon had been trying to get pregnant for several years, so when they finally found out that they were expecting a baby, it was very emotional. Mom wanted to ring in the new year with her new baby so we planned to add a few holiday props and DJ was just adorable!

DJ made the perfect "teddy bear" and just slept like a dream! Mom was concerned about DJ waking up or crying during the session, but I assured her it would be ok. I never schedule more than one session a day so that I am not in any time constrain. Every baby eventually goes to sleep :-)

We also got a few shots of a little Santa DJ.

When asked how she felt about the session, Denise said, "I was concerned that my little one would cry and move and the photo-shoot would be a nightmare. But it was just the opposite. The studio was warm and sounds were provided mimicking the womb. The experience was very pleasant. The pictures were ABSOLUTELY ADORABLE!"

Fire Fighter's Baby...

How amazing is it for me to photograph people at the beginning of their lives? Pretty amazing! Little Jameson's dad is a fire fighter and mom and dad both wanted pictures of their little boy in his dad's fireman's hat. Jameson cooperated perfectly and I think we got some great shots. There is something about a baby wrapped in an American flag that gives me chills. Daddy is so proud! Jameson's brother and sister wanted pictures together with him and I think these are three of the pretties children I have ever seen <3

The older siblings wanted to play with daddy's gear so we had to get some shots of them too! Sooooo cute!

Such a Beautiful Baby....

My job as a newborn baby photographer in the Athens, GA area allows me to meet so many interesting people. Nedsely and Frank are both from the Dominican Republic but they met here in the US. They are both doctors and have had their first baby, a little girl named Anna Leah. Anna Leah has got to be one of the prettiest babies I have ever seen...

Anna Leah is definitely a princess, and all she needed was a crown...

For Anna Leah's last set-up mom and dad wanted an earthy, rustic look, and chose my wooden box and off-white fur. The finishing touch was a headband that I made recently. I thought they went great together!

It's easy to see where Anna Leah got her good looks from....what a beautiful family!

Emily Pearl Was a Surprise!

As a newborn photographer in the Athens, GA area, I spend a lot of time in the studio with mom and dad, usually waiting for baby to fall asleep. We talk a lot and really get to know each other well. What I learned about sweet Emily Pearl was that, although she came as a surprise to parents Jessica and Jeff, she was definitely planned by God, and they wouldn't trade her for the world! The first thing mom thought when she saw her sweet baby for the first time was "Wow! I'm really a mom now!" She was amazed at how beautiful she was and how much hair she had.

When I asked Jessica what her favorite part of the photo session was, she said, "I loved watching you patiently work with our daughter even though she was being a little fussy. It took a few hours, but in the end it was well worth it!"

Mom chose one of my favorite props for her little Pearl, my vintage scale. Pearl sunk right into the white fur and dreamed away...

Mom was worried that her baby wouldn't stay asleep during the session, and it turns out she did wake up a few times, but she was as content as could be (very surprising to mom). I got some great pictures of her in that awake state as she laid calmly in the antique bread bowl! I do my best to make sure the environment is quiet and calm.

8-Month Photo Session with Sweet Livi

Audrey and Brian met when they were very little and have known each other their whole lives. I always thought it would be so romantic to not only spend the rest of your life with the one you marry, but to have also spent the first half of your life with them. Not many people have that....but Audrey and Brian do!

Sweet Olivia "Livi" was born at a petite 6 lbs. 12 oz. Her big brother Jacob, who is five years old is so incredibly sweet to Livi. Mom told me that he accidentally hit her on the head with one of his toys the other day and he just went to pieces because he hurt her. They both just light up when they see each other!

Mom chose one of my favorite props, the wash tub and the rubber ducky. Livi was happy to share her bath with this little fellow whose cute and yellow.

Audrey brought a handmade crocheted blanket that was made by her mother to use in the session. Audrey loves it because her mom grew up not knowing her own mother, and she is so glad to have special keepsakes like this to remember her mother by someday in the future.

Madison's 3-month session

Sweet Madison has been in my studio before when I photographed her newborn session. And one of my favorite things I love about me job as a newborn baby photographer in Athens GA is that I get to watch these little ones grow and change. While she was a little restless during her newborn session, she was all personality and smiles at her 3-month session.

Mom's best advice for a 3-month session is to make sure the baby is fed and has had a nap before the session. That gives us the best chance for a happy baby :-)

Madison is signed up for the Baby Plan which includes the 3-month, 6-month, and 1-year "Cake Smash" sessions. It will save mom a bundle compared to doing the sessions individually. I can't wait to do Madison's 6-month photos, and mom can't wait to have her 3 brothers and sisters in her 1-year session.

Sweet Sister Tea Party

Twice a year I participate as the newborn photography vendor at the Fairytale Finds Children's Consignment Sale in Athens, GA. At these sales I always offer a giveaway, and Molly M. won the giveaway this last time around. She didn't have any children of her own, but she had three beautiful nieces that she wanted to use the session on. So on a gorgeous spring day we set up a sweet little tea party for these sweet little dolls.

That is my good English china, Old Country Roses, that they are using. And as fragile as it is, no child has ever broken any of it (and i have used it a number of times for child tea party photo shoots).

It didn't take long before these sweet girls got into the "tea party " mood and I was just there to capture their imagination :-)

Two boys ~ Baby and Brother

Part of what I do as a newborn and baby photographer in the Athens, GA area is to get out there and connect with people that are in the baby business. One such place is Dr. Sepesi's office at Athens Healthcare for Woman located at 1270 Prince Ave. I have been working with his OB/GYN office for almost three years now and I have come to know his staff as well, especially his office manager, Lissa. She is who I have dealt with since the beginning and I have done a few fall mini sessions for her and her family.

So when she told me that she was pregnant with Andrew, I was excited to do her newborn session :-) She already had a little boy, Holten, that she wanted in a few of the shots. I was so happy to do that because he is such a cutie!

Here is baby Andrew....

Holten was so sweet and gentle with Andrew....they will be best friends forever!

Flower Garden Baby

Amber and Clint brought little Charlee to me for newborn pictures six months ago and they then decided to take advantage of my Baby Plan and have come back for the 3-month and now the 6-month milestone sessions. The Baby Plan also includes the 1-year "cake smash" session, and I can only imagine how cute Charlee will be then!

For her 6-month session, I decided to do something new and I made this adorable flower hat for her. She had the perfect face for it and her blue eyes were set off so perfectly with the pink and green.

Charlee was such a delightful little baby to work with....always smiling and happy. She has two other siblings, Luke and Colby, and Charlee was actually born on Colby's birthday! I can only image the wonderful birthday parties they will share!

At six months old, teething is just a part of life and mom was worried that it would be a problem, but we just kept a cloth on hand and it really wasn't an issue.

During the 3-month session, mom and I had talked about what she wanted for the 6-month session. It was great having her here in the studio to look at all the prop choices so I knew exactly how to prepare for this session. Mom loved the vintage stroller...I do too!

Mom's best advice to prepare for the 6-month session is to give your baby a bath and feed her before you leave. This helped her sleep during the car ride and she wasn't hungry during the session.

Babies like Charlee make me love my job as a newborn, and baby photographer in the Athens, GA area.

Great-Grandmother's Ring

This little angel is very blessed because she is the latest child in a family of five other siblings. She is definitely going to have fun with her older sister and four brothers. Mom wanted some vintage shots to highlight the baby's great-grandmother's diamond ring. We used it in these images with a vintage wicker pram and an adorable lace bonnet.

Dad wanted his little girl to be a "Bull Baby". She is so precious with a frilly white headband.

We also included some shots with one of her brothers.....so precious!

Before every session I have the moms fill out a questionnaire that tells me about their preferences. And this particular mom wanted frilly/frou-frou, and Pastel colors. Her nursery colors were gray and teal. We started with grey fabric on the beanbag and added a cute pink bow with a chevron band. Here's the adorable "froggy pose".

Then we moved onto some "Baby Bulldog" photos :-)

Then we finished up with a sweet teal backdrop and a white-washed flower box. I love to use the white fur with white props.

Pretty in Pink 1-Year Cake Smash Session

Funny how the same type of session seems to happen one after the other. Here is another 1-year cake smash session with adorable Betsy. This was not Betsy's first photo session with me. She already has had a newborn session and a family session, and she and her sister won a giveaway for a mini session in a vintage stroller.

Betsy has an infectious smile and she seems to love having her picture taken. Mom's favorite part of the session was how I was able to get Betsy to laugh and smile. She wasn't walking quite yet, but she could crawl as fast as anyone!

Mom was worried about what clothes to bring, but I thought Betsy's outfits were wonderful!

Sweet Haley Turns One!

One of my favorite types of photo sessions is a 1-year "Cake Smash". It is so much fun because the baby does all the work :-) Each session is different depending on how the child reacts to the cake. Some are shy and take a little time to get used to the idea of eating sweets with abandon. Others are more aggressive and start double fisting it right from the start :-)

This sweet, gentle little girl showed no hesitation once she saw the cake coming. She dove right in until she was covered in icing and ready for mommy to pick her up!

We started with some pretty pics of her in her birthday dress :-)

This beautiful baby was an absolute pleasure to photograph! I just love how these photographs of her turned out :-) Mom wanted my bow and tag that said, "From: God". I think it's adorable! I love my job as a newborn photographer in the Athens, GA area.....and I love how no two babies are alike!

A baby, a Sister, and a Teddy Bear

This sweet little angel came to me with her big sister and the Teddy bear that her father had as a child....two very precious items. We started out on the beanbag and big sister was very curious the entire time. She made achieving the "Froggy" pose quite a challenge, but baby was wonderful and I think it came out great!

The only special item that they wanted in the pictures was an adorable little Teddy bear that her father had kept all these years....and in great condition too!

Finally it was time to get her sister in the pictures. She was so beautiful and loves her little sister!

It is not hard to see where these beautiful children get their good looks from. Mom is stunning......just a natural beauty!

Vintage Baby

This mom and dad have been two of my favorite clients. This session was their 10th session with me and we still have a few more on the calendar. I have been having fun lately creating a vintage look. In a previous session I used a beautiful vintage baby stroller, and this time I have a great piece of vintage luggage. This sweet angel has the prettiest blue eyes I have ever seen and she is so dramatic...perfect for a vintage photo shoot :-)

A Little Girl and her Big Brother

Grandmother wanted to give her daughter a gift of a photo shoot for her children, so here we are with 6 year old big brother and 5 month old little sister. Since we did her newborn session she has grown so much and has just gotten prettier with every day. 5 months is not the best time to do a baby photo session. It's way past the 3 month milestone, but it's really too early for the 6 months session.

In this case, I treated it like a 3-month session where she was able to do the poses really well. She was great on the beanbag, but really was spectacular in my vintage wicker pram. Big Brother is as handsome as little sister is pretty. He took direction well and was quite the poser :-)

Dreams of Aviation....

This little boy has dreams of aviation in his future. Mom and dad had this wonderful vintage airplane rocker. I just loved the primary colors, and with the blue sky in the background, it was perfect! Sweet little Grant slept like a pro and the session went so well we were able to do extra set-ups!

A Sweet Locket for a Sweet Girl

One of my favorite things about my job as a newborn photographer in the Athens area is including items in the photo shoot that have special meaning to the parents. For this sweet little girl, mom wanted to include a locket that the baby was given and I just loved seeing how I could work it into the session. She looked so cute with it. I hope she will have it all her life and have these pictures to realize how special it is :-)

Dad is a former marine

One of my favorite ways to photograph a newborn is with their parents' uniforms....that might be the uniform of a fireman, a state patrol officer, even a marching band uniform. In this session, dad was a former marine and wanted pictures of his baby boy on his hat with his dog tags. I don't know why, but these images almost make me tear up....there is something so special about them <3

Baby and Big Brother

As you can imagine, every newborn session is different, and sometimes that is because of siblings that participate in the session. In this case we had a darling big brother attending and when I asked him to smile, he flashed me the most wonderful toothless grin! He really loves his little sister :-) I love being a newborn photographer in the Athens GA area :-)

They met in the UGA marching band...

This sweet couple met each other and fell in love while performing in the UGA marching band. So when the band was selling off the old uniforms as a fundraiser, they had to get one! Now with a new baby, it meant a lot to them to have pictures of their newborn with the beautiful uniform. I love when parents have special mementos like this. It makes their photos truly unique :-)

Sweet Baby on a Hero's Gear

One of my favorite newborn photo sessions is to photograph a baby on their dad's uniform, whether it be firefighter, policeman, etc. In this session this little girl's dad is a full-time fireman and he brought all his gear. As I was setting it up, I couldn't help but notice how heavy it all was. He told me that all together it weighs 80 pounds! I couldn't even image walking around with all that on, no less putting out fires and saving lives! These heroes are really to be commended!

I've also included here some of the other sweet shots we got in this session. One of my favorites is with the vintage football. I hope you enjoy them!

Fun and Sun in a Cotton Field!

I love when I get to do something different.... and this was different. I had two families that were best friends (and so were their kids) that wanted to do some pictures of their children in a cotton field. We picked the perfect day for it...the sun was out and it was warm and the kids had a great time! I will definitely be doing this again :-)

Baby It's Cold Outside!

Sweet Charlee was 12 days young when we did this photo shoot and such a dream to work with. She slept like a pro and so we were able to do a few more set-ups than normal. Typically I try to do 3 set-up. But sometimes, when we'ved moved so quickly, and baby is still asleep, I will keep going :-)

For little Charlee, we started with the standard beanbag poses that included the popular "froggy" pose, and then moved on to a new one that I've never done before. I had just gotten some cute winter hats with the long tail and pompom. I decided to let the baby's skin and the color of the hat be the stars of the show. To do this I put her on a black chair, with a black blanket, and a black background. I think the results were fabulous!

Then we switched gears and went quite the opposite and created a very girly princess set-up. She laid on a white fur that sat on a white wrought iron vanity chair. The rhinestone headband was the finishing touch.

And lastly, with baby still sleeping so well, we did the popular "bulldog baby" shot in the UGA football helmet. It was a great session and they ended up with some awesome images. Here are some of my favorites...

This sweet mama-to-be had the prettiest blonde hair and brought with her the beautiful handmade head band that she had made for her wedding. She looked so beautiful, and with the headband, she looked like a Greek goddess :-)

With the weather changing and all this rain we've been getting, it is very hard to schedule an outdoor session. Luckily, the weather on the day of this maternity session was great and we were able to do both indoor and outdoor pictures :-)

Recently I had the opportunity to photograph a beautiful little girl named Camille. She had some health issues and the parents asked me to come to their house and do the session there, so that Camille could stay at home. I was more than happy to. Her bedroom has a butterfly theme and mom had some cute butterfly props. I was so happy to be able to provide this for them. I hope you like them.

In this particular photo shoot I was contacted by the mom after these boy/girl twins came home from the NICU and were 10 weeks old. Already pretty old for a newborn photo session, but because they were preemies, they were still small and relatively "newborn-like". We had a great photo shoot and they slept like dreams!

Baby, big brother, and Thomas the Train

Newborn and Thomas the Train It is so sweet when you can incorporate the interests if the older siblings into a newborn session. In this case, we were done with the "sleeping" pictures and baby had woken up...but nothing to fear! There are beautiful pictures that are actually better when the baby is awake.

This sweet little girl got to watch her little brother having fun with his Thomas the Train set and it was love at first sight!
